What is grassfed beef?

Paine Family Farm Grassfed Beef

Here’s the general concept: we’re feeding cattle the way they were designed to eat. On our farm, that means that they are on pasture for as much of the year as possible and the rest of the year, we feed them grassy hay.

Unlike mainstream beef producers and many other pasture-based beef farms, we feed our cattle no grain. Feeding grain, usually corn, puts on pounds fast. But grain alters the animals’ rumen and the way they digest their food. We prefer to feed our cattle naturally. It takes longer to ‘finish’ a steer this way, but we think it’s worth it.

Grass-fed beef tends to be leaner and more flavorful than the grain-fed meat you get in the store. You’ll want to alter your cooking methods a bit for best results. Lean meat can get too dry if cooked too long.
